Pro patria," Latin for "for one's country," anchors this 1917 color lithograph, which asks men to join the Army for the period of the war. Its cavalry subject and American flag link recruiting to the image of a mounted soldier serving the nation. The Hegeman Print Company of New York produced many color posters of this era, and this one dates from the months after the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, when the Army was expanding quickly. Wartime enlistment posters like this one were meant to be read at a glance from the street.
