Few posters from the First World War speak as directly to young men as this U.S. Navy recruiting image, which asks viewers to "follow the boys in blue" in service of home and country. Painted by George Wright and presented to the Navy, it was printed in color by the Gill Engraving Co. in New York for the Navy's publicity bureau, most likely between 1914 and 1918. The Navy relied on posters like this to fill its ranks as the country moved toward and through the war, and the sailor's uniform at its center made the service look orderly, patriotic and worth joining.
