Printed in 1917, this color poster tells readers to follow the flag and enlist in the Navy, and it was issued by the U.S. Navy recruiting station at 146 Tremont Street in Boston. Soon after the United States entered the First World War that spring, the Navy needed to grow its ranks quickly, and posters like this one were a central tool for reaching young men in cities and towns. The composition is credited to H.R. Daugherty, and its sailor-centered design reflects the wartime effort to make naval service look patriotic and appealing. A collector named Willard Dickerman later preserved the sheet, which is why it survives today.
