The poster borrows its authority from Admiral George Dewey, whose squadron destroyed the Spanish fleet at Manila Bay in 1898 and who was one of the most famous American naval officers of his era. Its caption, "No finer military organization than the Marine Corps exists in the world," places his praise beside the direct challenge "He did his duty - will you?" aimed at the young man reading it. Such appeals were common once the United States moved toward entering the First World War in 1917, when the Marine Corps sought to expand its ranks quickly.
