This recruiting poster promises Marines a choice of "land, sea, air," a pitch that set the Corps apart from an Army still associated mainly with ground campaigns. Marines of the period did serve ashore, aboard ships, and in the Corps's aviation units, which had begun in 1912. The poster appeared during the years before the United States entered the war in 1917, when the Corps was expanding, and its bright offset color was typical of the commercial lithography used for wartime enlistment appeals. Marines fought in France in 1918, including at Belleau Wood in June, and such posters were meant to turn that reputation for hard service into a call for volunteers.
