This lithograph's title promises service "on land and sea," and its subject tags point to artillery, a reminder that Marines in this period were expected to serve ashore and afloat. Printed in color sometime between 1914 and 1918, it belongs to the wave of American war posters meant to fill the ranks as the country entered the fighting. The Marine Corps grew substantially during the war, and its units went on to fight in France, most famously at Belleau Wood in 1918.
