This 1917 color lithograph is one of the government posters that urged men to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps during the First World War. Its slogan, "Join me," makes a direct appeal to the viewer, and the line "the first to fight on land and sea" points to the Marines' dual role as a naval landing force and a ground combat unit. The poster was issued under the Treasury Department's imprint, one of several federal agencies that produced wartime recruiting art. Marine ranks grew sharply after the United States entered the war in April 1917, and the Corps' record in France, including the fighting at Belleau Wood in 1918, later became central to its public image.
