The poster's headline claims the Marines were "first to fight in France for freedom," a boast aimed at men deciding whether to enlist during the First World War. Illustrator F.C. Yohn painted the original image, and this color halftone reproduction carries the recruiting appeal "Enlist with the soldiers of the sea," with a flag in the design. The claim was recruiting rhetoric, but Marine units did fight in France in 1918, most famously at Belleau Wood in June, and the poster shows how the Corps sold its reputation to the public during the war years.
