The title is a recruiting slogan, and that is the detail worth starting with: "First to Fight" was the Marine Corps motto of the period, and posters like this one were a major part of the effort to fill the ranks after the United States entered the First World War in April 1917. Artists in that era produced large numbers of patriotic posters for the government and the armed services, and they relied on bold figures, flags and direct appeals to duty. The phrase "fight for democracy" reflects the language President Woodrow Wilson used to justify the war, framing American entry as a struggle to make the world safe for democratic government.
