This 1913 recruiting poster sets its appeal on a boast: the Marines were "first to hoist Old Glory on foreign soil." That claim draws on the Corps' long record of landings overseas, which the Marine Corps Hymn also celebrates with its line about the shores of Tripoli. The image is a color halftone reproducing a wood engraving by Axel Tornrose, and the slogan and text are credited to Sidney H. Riesenberg. Although the poster predates American entry into the First World War in 1917, the Library of Congress files it under World War I recruiting, a reminder of how the Corps promoted itself as a force for overseas service in the years before the war.
