Its title, "Soldiers of the Sea," casts the Marines as a seagoing force, a reputation they earned by serving aboard Navy ships and landing ashore wherever the government sent them. Dated 1914, the picture predates America's entry into the war in April 1917, when the country was still officially neutral and the fighting in Europe seemed far away. Marines were already active abroad that year, including the landing at Veracruz, Mexico, so the image reflects the Corps' peacetime work as much as the trench warfare that later defined the conflict.
