Recruiting posters for the Marine Corps leaned heavily on the sea, and this 1914 example, titled "Soldiers of the Sea," ties the Corps to the ships and landing parties of the Navy. It predates American entry into the First World War by more than two years, when the country was still neutral and the Corps was a small force. The appeal rests on adventure and overseas service rather than combat, a pitch that fits the Marines' long history of shipboard duty and landings abroad. It sells a peacetime career, which sets it apart from the wartime posters that followed after 1917.
