The Chancellorsville House, a brick residence at a crossroads in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, anchors this pencil drawing by E. Forbes, which depicts an attack on the Union position there dated May 10, 1863. The house gave its name to the battle fought that spring, when Robert E. Lee divided his army and sent Stonewall Jackson on a flank march that shattered the Union line. Fighting swirled around the building, and it was destroyed by fire during the early days of the campaign. The drawing offers a closer look at one corner of that confused and bloody struggle.
