Pencil sketch of the crossroads where the U.S. Ford road met the road to the Rapidan River, a junction that mattered in the Chancellorsville campaign of late April and early May 1863. Union forces under Joseph Hooker used the Rapidan crossings to reach the battlefield, and roads like these carried troops and wounded men through the dense woods known as the Wilderness. Lee's smaller Confederate army won the fighting, though Stonewall Jackson was mortally wounded by his own men that May. The drawing is one of the Civil War sketches given to the Library of Congress by J.P. Morgan in 1919.
