Scouting the Rapidan crossing at Raccoon Ford in Virginia, this pencil and Chinese white drawing on brown paper is dated September 14, 1863. By then the Army of the Potomac had withdrawn from Gettysburg, and the Rapidan marked the line between the two armies. John Buford, whose cavalry had held the ridge west of Gettysburg on the first day of that battle, was among the officers probing the river crossings. The sheet is a quick field record rather than a finished artwork, and its white highlights on the brown paper pick out the troopers and artillery moving through the countryside.
