A pencil drawing of a cavalry clash at Aldie, Virginia, stands out among Civil War battle sketches for its focus on mounted troops in the moment of contact. The fight took place on June 17, 1863, as Union horsemen under Gen. Alfred Pleasonton pushed to block Confederate cavalry under J.E.B. Stuart from slipping through the Blue Ridge gaps during the march north toward Gettysburg. Stuart's riders had been cut off from the main Confederate army and their absence left Robert E. Lee short of intelligence as his forces moved into Pennsylvania. The drawing is dated June 24, 1863, and it reflects how artists of the period recorded quick, chaotic fighting in the field.
