Few sheets on this board bring Union and Confederate leaders together on one page, as this chromolithograph does rather than offering separate portraits. Chicago's Kurz & Allison issued it in 1885, two decades after Appomattox, when the country was moving toward reconciliation and the war was increasingly remembered through its commanders. Chromolithography, which built a color image from many stone impressions, made such sheets affordable for parlors and schoolrooms. The title's promise to show the men "as they appeared" during the war reflects the period's appetite for recognizable faces of the conflict.
