This sheet gathers four senior Union commanders, Winfield Scott, George B. McClellan, Nathaniel P. Banks and John E. Wool, into one lithograph. Mayer & Stetfield printed it in Boston, and B.B. Russell published it around 1861, when the North was still raising and organizing its armies and the public was eager to see the men leading them. Scott, the veteran who had commanded the Union army at the war's outset, retired later that year, and McClellan succeeded him as general-in-chief, so the print records a moment of transition in Union leadership.
