Few prints from the Civil War period pair the president directly with his military commanders as this one does. The lithograph's title, "Lincoln and his generals," places Abraham Lincoln at the center of the Union's leadership in the final years of the war. Its imprints name two publishers, A. Brett of New York and C. A. Asp of Boston, and the date is given as about 1865, a time when printed portraits of wartime leaders sold widely to a public eager for images of the men running the conflict. The catalog record is incomplete, so the exact date and the identities of the figures are not confirmed here.
