Rather than a single battle or event, this print gathers the officers of the Confederacy onto one sheet as a collective tribute to the men who led the South's armies. Its 1879 date places it well after Appomattox, when former Confederates and their supporters produced memorial imagery that cast the war's leaders as heroes of a lost cause. Sheets like this circulated among veterans and sympathetic households, and this one was registered for copyright. The record also links the name F. Bourquin to the item, but that attribution is unverified and should be treated with caution.
