The ship in this photograph is the CSS *Stonewall*, one of the few ironclads the Confederacy ever commissioned. It was built in France as the *Sphinx* and was bought by Confederate agents, but it reached the Atlantic too late to take part in the war's major naval actions. By mid-1865, when this view was taken, the Confederacy had collapsed, and the ship's future was caught up in the diplomatic and naval disputes that followed the surrender. Its image is a useful record of the South's last attempt to match Northern naval power with modern armor.
