Few details in this print's record name the vessels or commanders, but its title places the action on the Mississippi near Fort Wright on May 10, 1862, when Union gunboats met the Confederate River Defense Fleet off Fort Pillow, Tennessee. The engagement was one of the early Union successes on the western rivers, and it helped open the way toward Memphis, which fell in June. Currier & Ives issued many hand-colored lithographs like this one to satisfy a northern public that wanted quick, vivid images of the war, so the print reflects both the event and the demand for news from the front.
