This lithograph focuses on the fighting at Laurel Hill and along the North Anna River, part of the Overland Campaign that Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee waged across central Virginia in May 1864. The title's dates, May 8 to 18, cover the period when the armies maneuvered and clashed around Spotsylvania Court House, a crossroads that became one of the bloodiest stretches of the war. The print was issued in 1888 by Kurz & Allison, a Chicago firm known for colorful battle scenes that brought the war to middle-class parlors and veterans' halls a quarter century after the fighting.
