Set along the Orange Court House Plank Road near Todd's Tavern, this lithograph shows fighting on May 6, 1864, the second day of the Battle of the Wilderness. The dense second-growth woods in this part of Virginia broke up the lines, and on that morning Confederate troops under James Longstreet struck the Union flank along the road, pushing back Federal units in a close, chaotic fight. Kurz & Allison, a Chicago firm known for colorful battle scenes, issued the print in 1887, more than two decades after the fighting, so it reflects how the war was remembered and marketed rather than a firsthand view.
