Dense woods on the north side of the Orange Plank Road, inside the Union lines, are the setting here, and the scrubby undergrowth shows why the fighting in this part of Virginia was so hard to see and control. The Battle of the Wilderness in early May 1864 pitted Ulysses S. Grant's Army of the Potomac against Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in tangled forest where brush fires often spread through the fallen and wounded. The subject headings also note skeletons, a reminder that human remains lay scattered on the ground long after the fighting ended. Such scenes became some of the most sobering images of the war.
