Night settles over the field in this drawing, where hospital attendants gather up the wounded within Union lines near Hatcher's Run, southwest of Petersburg, Virginia. The sheet, worked in pencil, Chinese white and black ink wash on brown paper, dates to the fall of 1864, when Union forces were pushing their lines west of the city to cut the Southside Railroad and other supply routes feeding Lee's army. Scenes of stretcher parties recovering men after dark were a common subject for artists recording the medical side of the Civil War, and this work shows how care for the injured continued long after the fighting ended.
