A small, dramatic sheet shows the moment a Confederate artillery limber, the wagon that carried ammunition for a gun, blows apart during the fighting near Middleburg, Virginia, on June 21, 1863. The drawing is by Alfred R. Waud, a battlefield artist who sent sketches like this one to illustrated newspapers, so it was made quickly in the field and reflects what he saw from the lines. The action was a cavalry clash during the Gettysburg campaign, when Union horsemen and Confederate troopers under J.E.B. Stuart fought across the Loudoun County countryside. Pencil and white highlights on brown paper give the smoke and burst a stark, sketchy immediacy.
