Few battle prints of the First Bull Run name a single officer as prominently as this lithograph, which places Col. Michael Corcoran and the 69th New York at the center of a charge against Confederate batteries on July 21, 1861. Corcoran, an Irish-born officer leading his regiment, was captured later in the fighting, and the publisher's dramatic rendering of the attack helped make his name familiar to a northern public eager for heroes in the war's first major battle. Currier & Ives issued the print in New York around that time, and its hand coloring reflects the firm's common practice for inexpensive popular prints of the period.
