Artillery fire aimed at Confederate rifle pits along the Rappahannock River is the subject of this pencil-and-white drawing on brown paper, dated June 5, 1863. The title notes that it was made before a third crossing by Gen. John Sedgwick's corps, the Union Sixth Corps, which had been stationed opposite Fredericksburg. Sedgwick's men had already crossed the river at Franklin's Crossing earlier in the war, and the sketch captures the artillery preparation that came before infantry moved over the water. The work is a field sketch rather than a finished painting, and its wash highlights give a sense of smoke and light over the riverbank.
