Few pictures from the Civil War were made on olive-tinted paper, and this drawing's sepia-green ground gives it a muted, field-sketch quality. It shows Confederate cavalry crossing the Potomac in September 1862, with Union scouts watching from the foreground, a scene the title places just before the Battle of Antietam. The subjects also name Stonewall Jackson, whose troops were moving through the region in those weeks as Robert E. Lee took his army north into Maryland. Lee's army crossed the river into Maryland that month, and the battle that followed at Sharpsburg on September 17 became the bloodiest single day of the war.
