In the woods beyond the Dunker church, Confederate troops sheltered behind a ledge of rock as they drove back Union soldiers on the right, according to this drawing's title. The fighting in that wooded ground on the morning of September 17, 1862, was among the bloodiest stretches of the Antietam campaign. Edwin V. Sumner, the veteran Union general whose corps attacked there, is named in the subject headings. The pencil sketch on tan paper looks like a quick study made close to the action, the kind of record artists produced when they tried to capture the battle as it unfolded.
