The site of this sketch is the Samuel Mumma farm near Sharpsburg, Maryland, where buildings burned during the fighting on September 17, 1862, the bloodiest single day of the Civil War. The drawing, rendered in pencil and Chinese white on brown paper, shows the farm's houses and barns in flames, and its title names both the owner and the 12th New York Infantry Regiment. Such scenes were common around Antietam, where the rolling farmland and its outbuildings became part of the battlefield and where local families often lost their property in the fighting. The sheet's small size and loose handling suggest it was made quickly, perhaps on the ground, which gives it the immediacy of an eyewitness record.
