The sheet is an unusually long, narrow panorama, about 49 centimeters wide, drawn in pencil and Chinese white on tan paper. It shows the fighting at Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862, as seen from the far right of the Union line. The names in its record point to the morning fight around the Cornfield and West Woods, where Maj. Gen. Joseph K. F. Mansfield, who commanded the Union right wing, was mortally wounded. The battle, known in the North as Antietam, remains the bloodiest single day in American military history.
