Known in some accounts as Slaughters Mountain, the ridge in Culpeper County, Virginia, gives this drawing its second title. The fighting there on August 9, 1862, pitted Stonewall Jackson's Confederate troops against a Union force under Nathaniel Banks, an early clash in the Northern Virginia campaign that followed the Peninsula fighting. The record dates the drawing only to the war years, so its exact date and maker remain uncertain, but it belongs to a broader tradition of battle scenes that let Americans far from the front follow the fighting.
