Knapp's Pennsylvania battery, a light artillery unit, appears in action in this pencil drawing of the fighting near Culpeper, Virginia. The battle of Cedar Mountain took place on August 9, 1862, when Stonewall Jackson's Confederates clashed with Union forces under Nathaniel Banks, and artillery fire was a significant part of the engagement. The sketch belongs to a Civil War drawing collection that J.P. Morgan gave to the Library of Congress in 1919, and it offers a direct record of how one battery was deployed during the fight.
