Thunderbolt Battery was a Confederate earthwork on the Savannah River, a few miles below Savannah, Georgia, that helped guard the water approach to the city. This small sheet, dated around early December 1864, shows the river view from the fortification as Union forces under William T. Sherman closed in during his march to the sea. The drawing combines pencil, white gouache, and ink wash on tan paper, a method often used by officers and artists to record terrain quickly in the field. Its value lies in showing how the river and defenses looked to those planning the campaign, as Savannah was evacuated later that month.
