This pencil drawing depicts a charge by Union troops on the left flank during the Battle of Cedar Mountain in Virginia in 1862. The fight took place on August 9, 1862, when Stonewall Jackson's Confederate command met a Union force under Nathaniel Banks near Culpeper. Because it was drawn quickly in pencil rather than made as a finished engraving, the sketch offers a direct sense of the movement and confusion of the fighting. The battle was one of the early clashes of the Northern Virginia campaign that led to the Second Battle of Bull Run later that summer.
