Here Jackson appears full-length on horseback, facing left and raising his hat in his right hand, a courteous gesture that gives the figure more life than a static pose. The image is a color halftone from about 1913, reproducing an earlier painting and registered for copyright by David Bendann. Halftone printing let publishers make inexpensive color copies of artwork for a public eager to remember the Civil War. Jackson, the Confederate general who earned the nickname "Stonewall" at First Bull Run in 1861, was mortally wounded by his own troops at Chancellorsville in May 1863.
