A seated, three-quarter-length portrait of Robert E. Lee, taken in May 1869, shows him in the last years of his life, after he had surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox in 1865. By 1869 he was serving as president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia, and he had become one of the most recognized figures of the postwar South. The "Handy" credit identifies the studio that produced the print, one of many portraits of Lee made during this period, when his image was widely reproduced and sold to a public eager to see the former general.
