Dated February 18, 1865, this albumen print shows Robert E. Lee shortly after Jefferson Davis named him general-in-chief of Confederate armies, as the Confederacy's position around Richmond and Petersburg grew desperate. Albumen prints like this were the standard photographic reproduction of the 1860s, made by coating paper with egg white and silver salts and printing from glass negatives. Lee was famously reluctant to sit for photographers, which makes his surviving portraits from this period especially valued. The date comes from an unverified shelflist card, and the print was a 1949 gift from Joseph Verner Reed.
