The surrender took place in the parlor of the McLean House at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on April 9, 1865, when Gen. Robert E. Lee handed over the Army of Northern Virginia to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for inexpensive popular lithographs, issued this hand-colored version later that same year, bringing the scene to households across the North. Published while the public was eager for news that the war was ending, it presents the meeting in a dignified light, honoring both commanders. The print is one of many the firm produced on Civil War subjects.
