Lee formally surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, in the front parlor of Wilmer McLean's brick house in Appomattox Court House, Virginia. The meeting followed Lee's retreat from Petersburg and Richmond, and the Army of Northern Virginia had little choice but to lay down its arms. Grant's terms were notably lenient: paroled Confederate soldiers could keep their horses and mules for spring planting, and officers were allowed to keep their sidearms. The scene became one of the most recognized moments of the Civil War, marking the effective end of the conflict's major fighting.
