This color lithograph shows the charge led by Gen. Philip Sheridan at Five Forks, a road junction southwest of Petersburg, Virginia, on April 1, 1865. The Union victory there cut off Confederate supply lines and helped force the evacuation of Petersburg and Richmond within days. The print was issued in 1886, about two decades after the fighting, by Kurz & Allison, a Chicago firm that produced many popular color battle scenes for American homes. Its later date means it reflects how the war was remembered and romanticized in the decades after it ended.
