The Battle of Five Forks, fought on April 1, 1865, in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, was one of the last major engagements before the fall of Petersburg. Union cavalry and infantry under Philip Sheridan broke a Confederate position there, cutting off the Southern supply line along the South Side Railroad and forcing Lee to abandon both Petersburg and Richmond within days. The scene shown here captures the chaotic ground where the fighting turned, and it is worth looking closely at the crowded roads and open fields that made the battle so decisive for the war's final weeks.
