The Battle of Chattanooga, fought in late November 1863 in the hills around the Tennessee city, was a decisive Union victory that broke the Confederate siege of the town and opened the road into Georgia. Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant pushed Braxton Bragg's Confederate army off Missionary Ridge, a climb that many of the attacking soldiers made without orders. The battle helped clear the way for William T. Sherman's campaign toward Atlanta the following year, and it remains one of the best-known turning points of the Civil War in the western theater.
