This chromolithograph shows Philip Henry Sheridan leading the final charge of the Battle of Winchester in Virginia, fought in September 1864, when his cavalry and infantry turned a contested fight into a decisive Union victory. The picture is a reproduction of a painting by Swedish-born illustrator Thure de Thulstrup, a specialist in battle scenes, and was issued by L. Prang & Co. of Boston around 1886. Prang's color prints brought Civil War subjects into middle-class homes, so the image reflects how Americans of the later 1800s remembered Sheridan as a dashing commander.
