Rendered as a color lithograph by L. Prang & Co. of Boston, this print reproduces a work by Thure de Thulstrup, a Swedish-born illustrator who became known for his battle scenes of the Civil War. It depicts the Atlanta Campaign of 1864, when Union forces under William T. Sherman closed in on the Confederate-held city, which fell in early September of that year. Prang, one of the best-known American color printers of the period, produced many reproductions of such paintings for popular audiences in the 1880s, when the war was a common subject for memorial and commercial prints.
