This chromolithograph shows Philip Henry Sheridan's ride on his black horse to the front at Cedar Creek, Virginia, on October 19, 1864, when he rallied Union troops that had been driven back earlier that morning. The image was drawn by Thure de Thulstrup and reproduced by L. Prang & Co., the Boston firm known for popular color prints. Its heroic composition reflects how Sheridan's ride, celebrated in Thomas Buchanan Read's 1865 poem, became a defining Union story of the Civil War. Printed around 1886, the piece shows how color lithography carried war memory into American homes after the conflict.
