This color print shows the river fight at Port Hudson, Louisiana, where Confederate artillery on high bluffs above a sharp bend of the Mississippi blocked Union navy ships from passing. Union forces besieged the post from late May to early July 1863, and its surrender, shortly after the fall of Vicksburg, gave the North control of the entire river. Boston publisher L. Prang & Co. issued this chromolithograph around 1887, reproducing a painting by J.O. Davidson. Its heavy guns and smoke over the water show the Civil War navy's dangerous work under fire from the bluffs.
