This lithograph ties the battle to a single day, July 3, 1863, the last of three days of fighting at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. That afternoon brought the Confederate assault on the Union center along Cemetery Ridge, known as Pickett's Charge, which failed with heavy losses and effectively ended Robert E. Lee's invasion of the North. The New York firm Currier & Ives issued many hand-colored battle scenes like this one, giving a home audience quick, affordable views of major campaigns, though the publication date is only an estimate. Today such sheets interest historians and viewers curious about how the war was pictured for ordinary households.
